My little family has moved several times over the course of our lives together. In the 30 years I’ve spent with my better half, I’ve moved 11 times, with one of those moves to the wonderful country of England. I know for those of you in the military, that’s just a drop in the bucket. I also know there are those out there, like many of my loved ones, who have stayed in the same place your entire life. I guess I fall somewhere in the middle. One thing moving does, is help to clear out unnecessary items. Whenever we get ready to move, it never seizes to amaze me how much clutter we accumulate.

My own personal tip, if you haven’t looked at something for a year (or 6 months, as in the quote above), get rid of it. However, I figured you’d need a few more tips than that, so I found an article from declutteringschool.com: 10 MOST POPULAR DECLUTTERING TIPS OF 2021. In this article there are links to several others, all with wonderful tips for decluttering different aspects of your life.
Guess what? The first tip is…Declutter like your moving house! 🤣 Here are a few others
- Apply the 20/20 decluttering rule. “The 20-20 decluttering rule says that if you can replace something for less than $20 and in under 20 minutes, it can safely be decluttered.”
- Decluttering something you love might be necessary. This can help you move on from an emotional situation and, possibly, heal.
- Purge your wardrobe. Here’s where that 1 year thing really comes in handy. If you haven’t worn something for 1 year, out it goes. No ifs, ands, or buts. Donate it to a worthy charity. OR, if it’s a quality, designer item, sell it online. or at a consignment shop.

Apart from books, I’m a much better at getting rid of things nowadays, especially clothes and shoes, which can get ridiculous if not kept in check 😝
Oh yeah, if you move all the time, it really does pay to pare down all your items, particularly ones that only gather dust and serve as reminders of what you used to do. Great tips here on decluttering. Thanks for sharing! I might just check out your decluttering link too.

Great tips! I have been purging all year. It’s not always easy, but good!
You really do have to be hard on yourself. It’s so easy to talk yourself into keeping something. Sticking with a time limit, such as 6 months or a year really helps.
Being hard on myself is hard! I am too sentimental. I also have a thing for vintage clothes, which many of mine have turned into. 😆
